Metal melodique

Nouveau venu issue de la scène autrichienne, Serenity se revendique de produire du métal mélodique progressif. Analysons donc cette assertion au travers de la musique de son premier album.

Le titre d’entrée, « Canopus », commence bien : des orchestrations orientales introduisent doucement le morceau, puis les guitares s’élancent dans un riff puissant et lourd, tandis que le clavier joue ses parties mélodiques. Le rythme ne ralentit pas jusqu’au pont vers les 2min30-3min, pour 30 secondes tranquilles et mélodieuses, pour repartir de nouveau sur un tempo plus rapide.
Cette chanson donne le ton pour l’ensemble de l’album : puissance et mélodie. Mais pour le coté progressif, j’avoue ne pas trop voir. Il y a bien quelques breaks, des changements de tempo dans le morceau, mais bon, rien non plus qui ne permettent de classer le groupe dans le progressif. A la limite, la comparaison avec Kamelot me semble la plus valable.

Même si les morceaux suivent globalement le schéma précité, l’ensemble n’est pas ennuyeux. Le rythme est brisé par les deux instrumentaux, qui fluidifient la structure globale, et les orchestrations sont bien différentes à chaque fois. Lesdites orchestrations sont d’ailleurs très bien construites. Que ce soit le son de clavier oriental et légèrement retro de « Canopus », le piano sur l’ouverture de « Engraved Within », les chœurs disséminés un peu partout ou bien les nappes de claviers durant « Circle of My 2nd Life », elles enrichissent des compositions déjà fouillées. Toutefois, le groupe ne tombe jamais dans la surenchère. Les titres tournent toujours dans les 6 minutes, un bon compromis pour des morceaux complexes mais percutants. On retiendra plus particulièrement « Circle of My 2nd Life », le meilleur de l’album, avec son refrain qui rentre dans la tête des la première écoute.

D’un point de vue technique, il n’y a rien à redire. Chaque musicien maitrise son instrument, y compris le chanteur, qui possède un timbre agréable à l’oreille et une voix puissante. La production est bonne.

Doué d’un bon sens de la mélodie et d’un clair talent de composition, Serenity commence très bien sa carrière.

Newcomer coming from the Austrian scene, Serenity tells they do progressive melodic metal. So let’s analyze this through the music of its first album.

“Canopus”, the first title, begins quite well: oriental orchestrations quietly open the song, and then come the guitars with a heavy and powerful riff while the keyboard plays its melodic parts. The tempo never slows until a bridge around 2min30-3min for 30 seconds of quiet and melodic music, and then everything accelerates again.
This song gives the tone for the whole album: power and melody. As for the progressive side, I do not see anything like that. There are some breaks, tempo changes in the songs but nothing to categorize the band as progressive. It is as prog as Kamelot for example.

Although the songs follow the precedent scheme, the whole is not monotonous. The rhythm is break by the two instrumentals, which allows a fluid structure, and the orchestrations are different on each song. By the way, those orchestrations are very well structured. The oriental and slightly retro sound on “Canopus”, the piano opening of “Engraved Within”, the choirs disseminated on the whole album or the keyboards layer during “Circle of My 2nd Life”, all those things strengthened already complex songs. However the band does not fall into the trap of too much complexity. All the songs clock in around 6 minutes, which is a good compromise between complexity and catchiness. The song “Circle of my 2nd Life” is the best of the album, with its chorus scotching into the head at the first listening.

There is not much to say of the technical side. Each musician masters its instrument, including the singer, who has a fair sound and a powerful voice.

Talented for composition and to produce melodic songs, Serenity begins very well its career.
