INTERVIEW IN ENGLISH BELOW THE FRENCH ONE !


Petite histoire … !

Dimension Zero est un groupe de death metal suédois qui a été fondé en 1996 par Jesper Strömblad et Glenn Ljungström, qui étaient alors guitaristes d’In Flames.
Ils sont bientôt rejoints par Jocke Gothberg et Hans Nilsson, respectivement chanteur et batteur du groupe.
Après avoir enregistré un premier MCD dans les studios Fredman, le groupe se sépare et ne réapparaîtra qu’en 2001, année d’enregistrement de leur premier album complet : « Silent Night Fever ».
Un an plus tard, un second guitariste se joint à l’aventure (et oui, Jesper n’était pas guitariste, mais bassiste du groupe !) : Daniel Antonsson du groupe Pathos, et qui est actuellement guitariste de Soilwork.
En 2003, l’enregistrement du second album “This is Hell” commence, mais Glenn est viré du groupe…
Dimension Zero continuera sans lui, partant en tournée en Allemagne, en Europe, et au Japon pour la promotion de l’album.

Comment est décrite la musique de Dimension Zero ?

Dimension Zero a souvent été décrit comme du death metal suédois old school, dans la veine de groupes tels que At The Gates ou Unleashed. Ils ont pris une tournure beaucoup plus mélodique, incluant même des passages un peu progressifs.
Dimension Zero, c’est aussi beaucoup de riffs rapides et tueurs, plein de hargne !


Et maintenant ?

Nous sommes maintenant en 2007 et nos musiciens ont travaillé sur leur nouvel album « He Who Shall Not Bleed », depuis 2006.

J’ai eu l’opportunité de rencontrer Jesper et Daniel au Wacken Open Air 2007 cet été, pour leur poser quelques questions sur le groupe et le futur…
La chose que j’ai retenue, c’est que leur prochain album va être terrible !

MF : Parlons du processus musical de Dimension Zero…

Daniel : Parfois on met deux semaines pour composer une chanson….Un jour on est supposé écrire une chanson, on part de rien, on arrive au studio… et à la fin de la nuit on a une chanson, pre-produite, avec la batterie, les guitares… bref, une chanson complète.

Jesper : Oui, et c’est vraiment hallucinant. J’aime vraiment travailler avec ces personnes là. On peut composer un album en deux semaines…pas de problème.



MF : Nous savons donc que vous jouez principalement avec In Flames (Jesper) et Soilwork (Daniel). Que trouvez-vous dans Dimension Zero, que vous ne trouvez pas dans votre autre groupe ?

Daniel : Peut-être que je peux parler pour moi et Jesper. Il n’y a … pas de compromis. On fait juste ce qu’on faire. Nous aimons ce metal, ce metal rapide. Peut-être que ça nous convient mieux. Avec Dimension Zero, on peut finalement faire ce que nous voulons également faire. Il n’y a pas de compromis, mais uniquement la manière qu’on choisie de faire les choses et on écoute personne d’autre. Nous aimons les mélodies, le processus, les parties rapides, bref, on s’éclate !

Jesper : Tu sais, avec In Flames, quoi que l’on fasse, nous avons beaucoup de pression…pour être là où nous sommes. Mais avec Dimension Zero, on s’en fiche.

Daniel : Oui, ça vient du cœur.

Jesper : Oui, on s’en fiche. Mais bien sûr, j’aime être dans In Flames, mais c’est une pression totalement différente. Avec Dimension Zero, on peut enregistrer un album, jouer au Wacken et présenter le nouvel album, y’a pas de problème. C’est ce que j’aime avec ce groupe.



MF : Peut-on dire que c’est votre part agressive que l’on retrouve dans Dimension Zero ?

Daniel : Oui, tu peux dire ça. Dans Dimension Zero, nous aimons ce côté agressif, mais dans le futur nous allons le développer. Je pense que le nouvel album est plus développé. Il y a plus de solos, de parties progressives … et il y a même un titre qui est plus lent… enfin, plus expérimental. On a essayé de nouvelles choses.



MF : Il faut également rappeler à nos lecteurs que nous sommes au Wacken Open Air et que Dimension Zero a joué il y a une heure ! Quel était votre sentiment sur scène ?

Jesper : Eh bien, je ne sais pas trop… Je devais tellement me concentrer sur ma performance que je n’ai pas vraiment fait attention au public. Il n’y avait pas beaucoup de personnes, mais je pense qu’ils ont aimé et ils avaient quand même l’air contents, donc c’est cool. C’était un super moment.

Daniel : C’est toujours un énorme plaisir de jouer avec Dimension Zero car ça n’arrive pas très souvent…

Jesper : …Et nous devons changer ça. Et comme ça, on pourra venir jouer en France par exemple !



MF : Jesper, à la base tu es le bassiste du groupe, et j’ai été surprise de te voir jouer de la guitare pendant le concert.

Jesper : La raison pour laquelle j’ai joué de la basse dans le groupe, est parce qu’à l’époque nous avions deux guitaristes : Daniel et Glenn. Mais nous avons viré Glenn. Après ça, on ne jouait qu’avec une guitare car les chansons n’étaient pas évidentes à jouer pour moi…c’était très différent de ce que j’avais l’habitude de faire. Mais on a toujours pensé que ça rendait mieux sur scène d’avoir deux guitares. Et puis je ne prends pas vraiment de plaisir à faire de la basse, j’aime faire de la guitare.



MF : Dimension Zero semble être de plus en plus connu au fil du temps…vous confirmez ?

Jesper : Oui, je suis assez convaincu qu’après le nouvel album, on le sera encore plus. Peut-être parceque le nouvel album est tellement….bon ! :)
De toute manière Dimension Zero n'est plus un projet parallèle... mais c'est un vrai groupe à part entière.


MF : Jesper, aujourd’hui tu joues avec Dimension Zero, mais également avec In Flames, en tête d’affiche du Wacken 2007. Qu’est ce que ça te fait ?

Jesper : En fait, je n’y ai pas encore pensé. J’étais vraiment concentré sur le concert de Dimension Zero, c’était le gros challenge pour moi. Evidemment, c’est cool d’être la tête d’affiche et ce sera un super show ce soir. Mais j’y penserai plus tard :)



MF : Pour finir, pouvez-vous me dire quel est l’album de votre carrière (tous groupes confondus) donc vous êtes le plus fier ?

Jesper : Je pense que ce sera le nouvel album de Dimension Zero.

Daniel : Oui, je dirais aussi le nouveau Dimension Zero, car c’était un gros travail pour moi et Jesper, on a mis beaucoup de nous même dans cet album… on y a mis beaucoup de notre âme et de notre cœur. Je suis fier des nouvelles chansons. Nous l’aimons, et j’écris également des paroles, donc je suis très content de ça. Et je ne dis pas ça pour faire de la promo :)

Jesper : Oui, et le nouvel album est terminé, mais nous cherchons un label pour le sortir en Europe.

Daniel : Nous avons un label au Japon et l’album sortira là-bas fin août. Mais nous espérons le sortir en Europe bientôt.

Jesper : Et comme ça on pourra jouer à la « Locomotive » à Paris :)

How did the dementia begin ?

Dimension Zero is a death melodic band of Gothenburg (Sweden) which was born in 1996, as a side project of Jesper Strömblad and Glenn Ljungström, also guitarists in In Flames.
Jocke Gothberg (former Marduk drummer) and Hans Nilsson (ex-Liers in Wait, Diabolique, Crystal Age) soon joined the band respectively as vocalist and drummer of Dimension Zero.
The adventure can begin and they recorded their first MCD “Penetrations From The Lost World” at Studio Fredman.
But they had to wait the year 2001 to record their first full-lenght album : “Silent Night Fever” because of a kind of split.

The arrival of Daniel Antonsson and the departure of Glenn Ljungström :

In the year 2002, a second guitarist joined Dimension Zero : Daniel Antonsson from the band Pathos, and currently guitarist in Soilwork.
This was a good year for the band as they could release their first album “Silent Night Fever”, but also play during a japanese tour and support the band Sodom.
On year later, the recording of the second album “This is Hell” begins ... but soon Glenn is kicked out of the band.
Dimension Zero will continue without him, doing a german tour for the promotion of the album, but also an european and a second japanese tour.


How is the music of Dimension Zero described ?

Dimension Zero has often been described as old-school swedish death metal. They also took a more melodic turn with progressiv parts. Dimension Zero is full of killer and speed riffs that makes you mad !

And now ?!

We are now in the year 2007 and the guys have been working on their new album “He Who Shall Not Bleed” since the year 2006.
I had the opportunity to meet Jesper and Daniel at Wacken Open Air 2007 this summer and to ask them some questions about the band and the future...
The thing i could retain is that the new album is gonna kick your ass!



MF : Let’s talk about the music process of Dimension Zero...

Daniel : Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to write a song...One day we are supposed to write one song, we don’t have anything when we come to the studio, and we start from zero, from scratch...and at the end of the night, we have a song, pre-produced, with the drums, guitars ... well, a complete song with everything.

Jesper : Yes, and this is really amazing. I really like working with such people of this chemistry. We can write an album in two weeks...no problem.



MF : So we know that you’re principally playing with In Flames (Jesper) and Soilwork (Daniel). So what do you find in Dimension Zero that you don’t find in your other band?

Daniel : Maybe I can talk for me and Jesper. It’s like...no compromise. We just do things that we want to do. We like this metal, fast metal. Maybe it’s more suitable for us. With Dimension Zero, we can do the stuff we want also to do. There is no compromise, but just the way that we want and we don’t listen to anyone else. We like the melodies, the process, the fast part, we’re enjoying ourselves !

Jesper : You know, with In Flames, whatever we do, we have a lot of pressure...to be where we are. But with Dimension Zero, we don’t care.

Daniel : Yes, it comes from the heart.

Jesper : Yeah, we don’t care. And of course, I love being in In Flames, but it’s a totally different pressure. With Dimension Zero we can record an album, play at Wacken, present the new album, it’s okay. That what I love with that band.



MF : Can we say that is it the aggressiv part of you that we can find in Dimension Zero ?

Daniel : Yes, you can say that. In Dimension Zero we like this kind of aggressiv way but in the future we will develop it. I think the new album is more developped. There are more solos, progressiv parts... and there is even one song that is more slow... well, more experimental. We tried new things.

Lynn : Ok, so we have to remind the readers that we are at Wacken Open Air and you played with Dimension Zero an hour ago. What was your feeling on stage ?

Jesper : Well, I don’t really know. I had to concentrate so much on my performance so I didn’t pay so much attention to the public. There were not a lot of people, but I think they liked it and they seemed really happy to the show so that sounds cool. We had a really good time.

Daniel : It’s always a really good time playing with Dimension Zero because it doesn’t happen very often...

Jesper : ...and we have to change that. So, we can come in France for example !



MF : Jesper, as the bassist of the band, I was surprised to see you playing guitar during the show.

Jesper : The reason I played bass-guitar is because at that time we had still two guitar-players : Daniel and Glenn. Then we kicked Glenn out of the band. And then we played with just one guitar-player because for me it was pretty hard songs to play...very different. But we always thought it was cool having two guitar-players on stage, it sounds better. And I don’t really enjoy playing bass, I enjoy playing guitar.



MF : Dimension Zero seems to be more and more known with the time... is it true ?

Jesper : Yeah, I’m pretty convinced that after the new record, we will. Maybe because the new album is so...good ! :)
Dimension Zero is not a side-project anymore...it's a real band.



MF : Jesper, today you’re playing with Dimension Zero, but also with In Flames as headliner of the Wacken Open Air 2007. What is your feeling about it ?

Jesper : I haven’t thought about being the headline actually. I was really focused on the Dimension Zero show, that’s the big challenge for me. Of course, it’s cool being the headliner and it will be a great show tonight. But I will think about it later :)



MF : To finnish, can you say which album of your carreer you’re the most proud of ?

Jesper : I think it’s gonna be the new Dimension Zero album.

Daniel : Yes, I would also say the new Dimension Zero album, because it has been a big effort for me and Jesper, we put so much into it from our soul and our heart. I’m proud of the new songs. We like it, and I’m into the song writing also and I’m really happy about it. I don’t say that to make the promotion of the band, for sure ! :)

Jesper : Yes, and the new album is finished, but we are still looking for a label to release it in Europe.

Daniel : We have a label in Japan and the album will be released there in the end of August. But we hope to release it soon in Europe.

Jesper : And then we will play at the “Locomotive”, in Paris :)
